油桐系大戟科，属落叶乔木。树高约六米左右，树冠圆如伞盖。树皮灰褐色，幼时光滑，老时粗糙，并有纵裂。叶互生，叶柄顶端近叶基处有具柄或无柄的脉体二枚。花大，单性同株或异株，组成花锥花序，花瓣呈五角形，白色或基部略带红色。每年三月、四月开花，果实成熟于十月，呈球形或卵形，壳厚。
虽然已是春尽花残时，但院落里的一棵桐树花开的正艳。
