标准体系是一定范围内的标准按其内在联系形成的科学有机整体。与实现一个国家的标准化目的有关的所有标准，可以形成一个国家的标准体系; 与实现某种产品的标准化目的有关的标准，可以形成该种产品的标准体系。标准体系的组成单元是标准。标准体系应具有以下特性：目的性。即每一个标准体系都应该是围绕实现某一特定的标准化目的而形成的; 层次性。即同一体系内的标准可分为若干个层次。它反映了标准体系的纵向结构，协调性。即体系内的各项标准在相关内容方面应衔接一致，配套性。即体系内的各种标准应互相补充、互相依存，共同构成一个完整整体，比例性。即体系内各类标准在数量上应保持一定的比例关系，动态性。即标准体系随着时间的推移和条件的改变应不断发展更新。将一个标准体系内的标准，按一定的形式排列起来的图表，就是标准体系表。制订标准体系表，有利于了解一个系统内标准的全貌，从而指导标准化工作，提高标准化工作的科学性、全面性、系统性和预见性。
