机械杂质是指存在于润滑油中不溶于汽油、乙醇和苯等溶剂的沉淀物或胶状悬浮物。这些杂质大部分是砂石和铁屑之类，以及由添加剂带来的一些难溶于溶剂的有机金属盐。通常，润滑油基础油的机械杂质都控制在 0.005% 以下（机杂在 0.005% 以下被认为是无）。
