机械功率是表示机械做功快慢的物理量，而效率是表示机械在能量利用率高低方面的物理量。功率大的机械，效率不一定高。例如，蒸汽机车的功率比摩托车的功率大，但这种机车的效率却比摩托车的效率低。功率和效率是互不相关、互不依赖的物理量。同一机械的功率可变，但效率是不变的。 对于某个机械来说，铭牌都标有它的最大输出功率。使用时不得超过这个数值，但它不一定工作在这一功率上，因此常将机械在某一时刻的瞬时功率或某段时间内的平均功率，称为机械的实际功率。
