明化镇组是第三纪上新世地层。是中国河北平原第三系顶部的一个组以杂色砂岩、泥岩为主，两者常以互层出现，一般厚556—1100米，最大厚度为1653米。与下伏馆陶组呈整合接触。含介形类：（Ilyocypris-candonidia）组合；腹足类：（Melaniacf.saigoi，Gyraulus）（Succinea，Bithynia）等；轮藻：（Hornicharaminama），（Tectocharameriani）等；孢粉：上部为（Cu-pressaceae-Taxaceae）组合，下部为（Ulmipol-lenites），（celtisoollenites）（Fagaceae，auer-coidites，Betulcpoliemites）等。本组可与山区的“壶流河组”相对比。
