文献分类是指根据文献内容和形式的异向，按照一定的体系有系统地组织和区分文献。为便于文献检索，文献分类方法必须做到科学合理。文献分类方法（简称分类法）是由许多类目根据一定的原则组织起来的分类体系，并用标记符号来代表各级类目和固定其先后次序。它是情报图书部门日常用以类分文献、组织藏书的工具。文献分类法的表现形式是分类表。
