文学史是人类文化成果之一的文学的历史。它是研究文学的历史现象及其发展规律的科学。根据不同国别、地域、民族及不同时期、不同体裁等分类标准，可分为国别史（如中国文学史）、世界或地区史（如世界文学史、欧洲文学史）、通史或断代史（中国现代文学史）、民族史、分体史等。 本书在2005年修订过一次。此次修订，是在2005年第二版的基础之上，在保留原书篇幅及编写宗旨、指导思想、体例、框架等特色的前提之下，对原书进行的一个中等规模的修订。主要是对第二版的一些缺失之处予以修正，并审慎地加入了新的研究资料和学术成果，保持本书的内容前沿性。
