弹性散射和非弹性散射（elastic scattering and inelastic scattering）又称弹性碰撞和非弹性碰撞。在碰撞中，如两粒子间只有动能的交换，粒子的类型及其内部运动状态并无改变，则这种碰撞称为弹性散射。如在高能物理e-+e-─→e-+e-、e+p─→e+p、p+p─→p+p诸过程中，始末态粒子的类型及其内部运动状态并无改变，分别称之为高能电子－电子、电子－质子、质子－质子弹性散射。如除有动能交换外，粒子内部状态在碰撞过程中有所改变或转化为其他粒子，则称为非弹性散射。如电子－原子碰撞中所引起的原子电离和激发，又如高能e+e-碰撞产生μ+μ-,τ+τ-或各种强子等都是非弹性散射过程。
