若晶体是由某个晶面族A,B,C,…组成,其面间距为d,当射线以掠射角α投射到晶体时,晶面A上点阵的散射和晶面B、C等点阵的散射相互干涉,对于同一层的散射线,当散线与晶面间的夹角等于掠射角时,在这个方向上射线产生相长干涉,对于同一层的散射线,当散射线与晶面间的夹角等于掠射角时,在这个方向上射线产生相长干涉。而对于不同层的散射线,当光程差为波长的整数倍时,各个面的散射线相互加强,形成光强的极大,这即是晶体对射线的布拉格衍射。
