原为藏传佛教中主持授戒者之称号，相当于汉传佛教寺院中的方丈。其后举凡深通经典之喇嘛，而为寺院或扎仓（藏僧学习经典之学校）之主持者，皆称堪布。担任堪布的僧人大都是获得拉然巴格西学位的高僧。
德巴堪布的著作已整理完毕，一共有四函。
