垃圾填埋根据工艺的不同，又分传统填埋法和卫生填埋法两类。传统填埋这种方法实际上是在自然条件下，利用坑、塘、洼地将垃圾集中堆置在一起，不加掩盖，未经科学处理的填埋方法。卫生填埋法是一种采用工程技术措施防止污染和危害环境的处理方法。这种充填方法处理量大、操作简单、投资相对较低。是目前我国城市生活垃圾处理的主要方法。但该方法也存在着填埋后易造成二次污染，填埋场发酵产生的沼气易引起爆炸，同时也占用大量农田面积，填埋场周围的臭气严重影响大气环境的缺点。
