块断作用（block faulting）是指将地壳切割为不同高程、不同方位大小块体的断层作用。一般认为典型的块断作用发生在地壳浅表构造层次的伸展构造环境中，如由共轭正断层系活动所造成的地垒和地堑及其有关的盆岭式构造地貌景观。但有些学者认为块断作用在不同构造层次和各种构造环境中都存在。
