和字（わじ）,也就是日造汉字，典型的日造汉字，在唐朝时期，大量的中国汉字传入日本以后，日本民族在借用中国汉字的基础上自己又创造了一些方块字，自称和字（或国字），和字有时候也指日文假名（日文所用的字母，多借用古代中国汉字的偏旁。楷书叫片假名，草书叫平假名。） 一般日造汉字是指那些既无汉语读音，也无法译为中文的“在日本本土被‘造’出来的”汉字。（目前在我国，究竟如何翻译这些和字，意见尚未统一。）因为日本人称自己为大和民族，在十九世纪，中国汉字在日本很多也很杂，后来日本政府相继颁了几次法令，规定汉字的使用（到现在为止，中国汉字在日本还存在的共有1945个）。
