后猫（Metailurus）是一类中型的食肉类动物，是剑齿虎家族的一员。吻部宽短，鼻骨后端比前端宽大。上犬齿长而侧扁，前后缘呈刃形，第3门齿和第3前臼齿之间的齿缺较短，第4前臼齿强大。下犬齿粗大，第1臼齿发达。具有最完善的捕杀和食肉能力，趾端具有尖锐的能屈能伸的爪子，颈部粗壮，可以抵抗由于头和牙齿顶的猛烈动作而引起的巨大震动。
