合气，原指剑术用语中对方与己方于中央线前方两剑相交僵持的状态（现代剑道仍沿用该定义）。简单的说，指双方双目相交，剑刃互抵的状态，即相持但又无法分出胜负的情形。 当处于该种状态中，长期相持只会无谓消耗双方的体力。当有一方或双方试图想摆脱这种状况时，称为“合气卸”。古流剑术的技法体系，大都以“合气卸”为基础建立。比如新阴流等，就大量使用斜切入位等合气卸技法。小野派一刀流的情况，则以正面突破后，剑尖挑拨为其特征。
