上火是中医的理论，西医一直没有明确支持。上火有着更深层次的意思，也就是上火的一些广义的症状，比如胃火可以有胃疼、大便干等症状，肺火可以有咯血、咳嗽、黄痰等症状，肝火会有一些烦躁、失眠、女性会有乳房胀痛等。火分虚火和实火，正常人体的阴阳平衡，阴正常而阳过亢为实火。由于阴不足而相对显得阳过亢，称为虚火。中医通过对病情轻重的辨析，总结出风、热、火、毒学说，来描述疾病由表及里的过度，从而来指导临床诊治。其中表明热多化火，火盛成毒的道理。
