压燃式发动机，是不靠电火花点火，而是依靠压缩终了时缸内充量的高温、高压引起混合气自燃的内燃机。压燃式发动机或柴油机广泛应用于轿车、货载汽车、机车、船舶和发电。大多数压燃式发动机常采用排气涡轮增压，它可以降低发动机单位输出功率的尺寸和质量。由于采用压燃，所以压缩比比点燃式发动机大，具体取决于发动机缸径、类型以及自然吸气还是增压。柴油机就是典型的压燃式发动机。
