南竹，又名毛竹，禾本科竹亚科刚竹属，单轴散生型。广泛分布于400～800米的丘陵、低山山麓地带。南竹生长快，适应性强，恢复一棵60英尺高的树木需要60年的时间，而一棵60英尺的南竹只需59天即可再生。南竹大面积的种植推广能保持水土流失，调节局部小气候，净化空气，美化环境，并且成林时间较木材而言大为缩短。
