几何声学是用射线的观点研究声学问题的科学。几何声学的条件是：传声媒质的边界及媒质中的不均匀性的线度甚大于声波波长，而在一个波长的距离上声波的振幅和方向近乎不变。在几何声学中，引入射线的概念，射线上每一点的切线方向与声波的传播方向相同，因而撇开声的波动性质，而假定声是沿射线传播。确定射线的方程为程函方程，是几何声学的基础方程。
