内在缺陷，又称“自然特性”，“固有瑕疵”。是指货物或者物质本身固有的、在正常的情况下也会发生质的变化而损坏或灭失的自然特性。例如，鲜活货物的易腐、死亡;含水量过高的豆类容易发霉、生虫等都属于内在缺陷。对货物或物资因内在缺陷或因自然特性引起的损失，除非被保险人与保险人特别约定并在保险单上载明,否则保险人不负赔偿责任。
