所谓公共信息（Public Information），是指所有市场参与者都能够自由获得的信息。在竞争激烈的寡头垄断中，经济主体对市场知识的需求特别迫切。他们在客观上假定其他竞争者的行为是合理的，即假定所有的市场参与者都具备公共的市场知识。这种共同的市场知识即公共信息。 罗伯特·维里克查尔（1980）认为，当具有信息集合A的市场有效时，并且在每个市场参加者可利用的信息中，唯有信息A的知识，使市场参加者产生了共同的或者同质的认识，这就是市场的常识或共同知识。简单地说，公共市场知识就是指这样一种假设：所有的相关信息都能够被所有的市场参加者获取。
