信息环境，又叫拟态环境或象征性现实，是一个社会中由个人或群体接触可能的信息及其传播活动的总体构成的环境。构成信息环境的基本要素是具有特定含义的语言，文字，声音，图画、影像等信息符号。这些信息不仅仅是知识，而且包含着特定的观念和价值。因此信息环境具有社会控制的功能， 是制约人的行为的重要因素。现代社会越来越巨大化和复杂化，人们由于实际活动的范围、精力和注意力有限，不可能同与他们有关的整个外部环境和众多的事情都保持经验性接触，对超出自己亲身感知以外的事物，人们只能通过各种“新闻供给机构”去了解认知。媒介所提供的信息环境不是对现实环境的“镜子”式的再现，而是通过对象征性事件或信息进行选择和加工、重新加以结构化后向人们提示的环境。信息环境会对人们的观念和行为产生重要影响，是现代人建构主观真实的主要途径。
