这里的佛社指的是民间信佛者和僧尼互相配合而结成的佛教组织，在民间一般称为“法义”或“法社”。有时两者混称。中国民间结佛社之肇始，最迟不晚于北魏。北魏初年，造佛像、尤其是造大佛像之风兴盛，民间为共同组织建造佛像，以齐心协力完成此类浩大工程，遂结成团体，以一族或一村为单位，时称“义邑”或“邑义”。义邑由僧尼和在家信徒组成，一般以后者为主，其成员称为“邑子”。
