数学模型是对客观事物给定输入、输出关系的数学表达式。实际无线环境中不可能有自由空间那样理想的无线传播条件。在不同的反射、绕射、散射条件影响下，信号强度中值随传播距离、频率等因素变化的规律非常复杂，很难用简单的数学表达式来计算。通过理论或者实测的方式，建立无线电波传播损耗随各种因素变化的数学关系表达式称为传播模型。
