东风商用车公司的前身是1969年开始建设，1975年正式投产的第二汽车制造厂（1992年更名为东风汽车公司）中重型商用车制造业务，2003年东风汽车公司与日本日产汽车公司合资组建中国汽车行业最大的合资公司——东风汽车有限公司后，东风汽车公司原中重型商用车资产及业务全部进入东风汽车有限公司，成为东风汽车有限公司中重型商用车事业部。 2015年1月26日，由东风汽车集团股份有限公司和沃尔沃集团共同投资组建的东风商用车有限公司，在湖北十堰正式成立并运营。
东风商用车公司是东风汽车有限公司下辖的中重型商用车事业部，是中国目前规模最大的商用车生产基地。
