无色液体，有类似苹果的香味。与氧化剂可发生反应。具有酯的一般化学性质。毒性略高于乙酸丁酯，在一般工业操作条件下无毒害，生理作用和乙酸丁酯类似，有刺激性。可由丁醇和丙酸反应而得。丙酸丁酯用作硝基纤维素的溶剂、香精、香料。是硝酸纤维素、天然及合成树脂的溶剂，可作漆用溶剂，还用于香精制造。
