世界翻译大会每三年举办一次，迄今已召开18届。大会分法定大会和公开论坛两个阶段。法定大会仅向会员组织的代表开放，讨论章程修改等内部事务，确定下届大会举办国和地点，选举新一届国际译联理事。
世界翻译大会自1954年在巴黎第一次召开以来，至今已经举办了十七届，从历次大会的主题来看，“沟通”是其核心。
