《世本》又称作世、世系、世纪、世牒、牒记、谱牒等，是古代谱牒。“世”是指世系；本则表示起源。据说是由先秦时期（亦有说汉代）史官修撰的， 记载从黄帝到春秋时期的“帝王”、“诸侯”、“卿大夫”的世系和氏姓，也记载帝王的都邑、制作、谥法等。全书可分《帝系》、《王侯世》、《卿大夫世》、《氏族》、《作篇》和《居篇》及《谥法》等十五篇。
