深紫色结晶，易潮解。加热至熔点以上分解。不稳定，易自燃。用作还原剂以及偶氮分析。由四氯化钛用氢气还原制得。 能溶于冷水、热水和HCl中，极易溶于乙醇，不溶于乙醚，溶于HCl溶液得四水合三氯化钛 TiCl3·4H2O，后者在空气中不稳定。在空气中可被氧化为Ti (Ⅳ)，湿气可加速氧化过程，因而须保存在CO2气氛中。由TiCl4的稀HCl溶液电解制得的紫色TiCl3·6H2O盐较稳定。
