the links between energy and mass postulated by the Special Theory of Relativity reinforced Mendelsohn`s conviction that Modernity must be expressed though dynamic forms. His early sketches for the tower had little of the force of his wartime studies, but these quickly gave way to drawings intended to convey the feeling that the tower was shedding mass as it appeared almost to grow out of the landscape, like some strange plant or geological formation - although, judging the contemporary reactions, this interpretation seems to have been lost on all but Mendelsohn`s own circle.
