Three different planar structural modes of 5 approximants have been put forward by using pentagon, decagon, flat hexagon and boat-shape respectively.

This paper compares approximants with continuants, semivowels, fricatives, liquids, and vowels, and identifies the initial ri in Mandarin as an approximant rather than a voiced fricative.
