Devaney or O'Devaney is a variant Anglicization of the Irish Gaelic surname Ó Duibheanaigh ‘descendant of Duibheannach’, which is normally anglicized to the Downey (surname).[citation needed] Devaney is a surname of ancient Gael royals. The O'Downey or O'Devaney chiefs ruled in Cinel Amhalgaidh in that portion of Gaelic Ireland's Ulidia (kingdom) that is, now, Clanawley in County Down. In the Irish language Ó Duibheannach is made up of the elements dubh ‘black’ and the second may be eanach ‘marshy place’.There is more than one Irish surname that has been Anglicized as Devaney, another is Ó Duibheamhna also in east Ulster. Anglicized from the Gaelic Ó Duibheamhna, from a personal name based on dubh ‘black’ + the genitive of Eamhain, the Gaelic name of Navan fort, County Armagh the former capital of Ulster.
