Mr Birla says it would have been very hard to imagine buying Novelis five years ago.

“In the next three years we'll be long on aluminium,” said Mr Birla. “And this aluminium needs to go somewhere to get value added.”

Each approach may turn out to have its own applications, says Birla, and the ability to conduct side-by-side comparisons is important.
