Sussman travelled to the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, to take the photographs using a microscope.

The oldest living thing Sussman has photographed are these Actinobacteria from Siberia, Russia, which were found in an ice core.

Legend has it that the tree is 7000 years old, but Sussman has found carbon-dating studies indicating it is a mere 2200 years old.

"I've heard everything between 1500 to 3000 years as an age estimate for the largest welwitschias," says Sussman about these strange plants.
