Richard Prum: Dinosaurs are all around us. They didn't go extinct.

Dr. Prum, an expert on the structure of feathers, told EarthSky that feathers originated in dinosaurs.

"That doesn't mean that birds' color palette might not eventually evolve to expand into new colors," Prum said.

Prum said this dinosaur had the kind of coloration you might find today on a particularly striking turkey or chicken.

Work at the Montana lab, Dr. Prum said, has led people to realize how complex flight is and how many different things are happening when a bird flies.
