A person who does nothing but to compare a program against some reference is a checker, not a tester.

One day, a tester working on the program noted that a requirement specifying the possible values of this Cheese attribute had recently changed. No longer was it two bytes.
For example, if a tester manually validates a particular text for a particular image, then he can program a machine to validate the same text for copies of the image throughout the application.
The underlying problem here is a mismatch between the tester's and the developer's mental models of the program; the tester, on the outside looking in, and the developer on the inside looking out.
Perhaps an operation takes an oddly long time, which suggests to the attentive tester that increasing the size of an "irrelevant" dataset might cause the program to slow to a crawl.
