"There's no question we're going to be out of address space by springtime of 2011," Cerf said.

When he was asked if he ever expected the Internet to become so popular, Dr. Cerf said the number was a surprise.

Many features being developed today wouldn't have been possible at birth given the slower computing speeds and narrower Internet pipes, or bandwidth, Cerf said.
