子贡问（他的老师孔子）说：“有什么话是可以终身奉行的吗?。

子贡问怎样实行仁德，孔子说：工匠要干好工作，必须先要锋利工具。
Zi Gong asked how to be benevolent, Confucius said: In order to achieve good workmanship, one must sharpen the tools.
子贡又接着问，这两个只选一个呢？
But if only one was chosen, what would be in the above two? Zi Gong asked.
昔者子贡、问于孔子曰：‘夫子圣矣乎？’
