The Unesco World Network of Biosphere Reserves now includes 598 reserves in 117 countries.
The Unesco World Network of Biosphere Reserves seeks to encourage conservation as well as sustainable use.
It uses its World Network of Biosphere Reserves as vehicles for knowledge-sharing, research and monitoring, education and training, and participatory decision-making.
The MAB-ICC decided to add 22 new sites from 17 countries to the UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) which now counts 553 sites in 107 countries.
The 2015-2025 Strategy has been developed over the course of a year, with the input of many different national committees, experts and representatives from the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).
The International Co-ordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB-ICC) is meeting on 9-13 July 2012 to consider new sites for inclusion in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
In coordination with the Regional Bureau for Sciences in Nairobi and the Man and Biosphere (MAB) Secretariat at Headquarters, implement the ecological sciences programme, including support to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves through assistance to the cluster countries for the application of the Seville strategy and Madrid Plan of Action.
There are a large number of UNESCO sites and programmes active in the UK, including 28 World Heritage Sites, eight Biosphere Reserves, three UNESCO Creative Cities, 18 UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Networks at UK Higher Education Institutions, and 66 UNESCO Schools, among many others.
Examples of how the Conventions contribute to development include the UNESCO designated sites, such as the nearly 1000 World Heritage properties and over 500 Biosphere Reserves, which provide ideal laboratories where innovative heritage-driven approaches to sustainable development are tested.
"It is a unique opportunity to have access to biosphere reserves in all the big mountain areas of the world, " says Mr Messerli.
