The WJC is a small nonprofit organization that was founded in 1936 to fight for the interests of Jews.

Bronfman began reading a daily portion of the Talmud, a book of Jewish tradition, under the tutoring of WJC Secretary General Israel Singer.

In the 1990s, after the Soviet Union collapsed, the WJC shifted its attention to obtaining restitution for the 6 million victims of the Holocaust and their families.

Bronfman and the WJC also helped in the campaign to identify Kurt Waldheim, the former United Nations secretary general and president of Austria, as a Nazi war criminal.

On Saturday, Jobbik leaders denounced the WJC, whose plenary session was being held outside Israel only for the second time since 1966 to focus attention on rising anti-Semitism in Hungary and across the continent.
