We shared food, we shared moments, we shared laughter, we shared tears, we shared expectations together.
We combined and got poorer together. (Laughter.) So we combined our liabilities, not our assets. (Laughter.) So we were paying more for our student loans than we paid on our mortgage each month.
When we married, we got poorer together. (Laughter and applause.) We added up our assets and there were no assets. (Laughter.) And we added up our liabilities and there were a lot of liabilities, basically in the form of student loans.
When you think back to what happened in 2008, back then we won Colorado by about 215, 000 votes. (Applause.) Now, that might sound like a lot, and we appreciated it -- (laughter) -- we will appreciate it again. (Laughter and applause.) But when you break that number down across precincts, that's just 73 votes per precinct.
We didn't run because it was fun to get your name in the newspapers -- most of the time, it's not. (Laughter.) We didn't run so a bunch of folks on cable TV could chatter about you. (Laughter.) And we didn't run to kick our problems down the road.
And we get people to think out of the box and they join us and we provide camaraderie, we can provide advice, and we also provide laughter, which is very important when you're going through job loss.

We got married and together we got poorer. (Laughter.) After we graduated, we were lucky enough to land good jobs, so it was still a great investment for us to go to college and law school.
For 30 minutes, we stood in a circle and partook in playful exercises meant to induce laughter and then wrapped it up with a brief laughter meditation where we laid stomach-up on the floor and laughed as hard as we could.

We haven't seen any canings on the floor of the Senate any time recently. (Laughter.) So we shouldn't over-romanticize the past.
