Steve Lowe, from the Northumberland Wildlife Trust, said a similar project had been carried out in the Cairngorms, which saw the water vole making an "impressive comeback".

Other organisations involved in the water vole reintroduction include the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and water vole expert Derek Gow.

"We hope that this project will not only see the waterwheel turning again for the first time in decades, but will also see a return of water vole and other species to the mill pond and leetes, " he said.
