After independence, nine countries in the Niger River Basin in Africa created a joint river basin authority to cooperatively manage their joint waterresources.
The importance of cooperation in managing limited waterresources in a world where demand is rapidly growing, cannot be underestimated: some 145 countries share a major river basin with at least one other nation.
