The company also hopes the Waja will be a nice export earner. (Proton made 17% of 1999 sales from exports and was rated among the top 10 carmakers in Britain for customer satisfaction.) But Proton's profits have fallen 85% since 1997, partly because the government has kept it from raising prices, and it may fall into the red this year.
