Downloads are in VC-1 (aka WMVHD) at 720p, 6.8Mbps video with 5.1 surround.

We tested it out and had no problems with download speed or playback of the VC-1 and h.264 encoded files, but we're not sure if they're ready to rival Youtube just yet.
This is in addition to many other codecs supported in software and you can purchase licenses from the Raspberry Pi Store for MPEG-2 and VC-1 hardware decoding for just a few bucks.

The reviewer at High Def Digest has nothing but praise for the 1080p VC-1 transfer, with all the fast moving cars, CGI and loud colors it manages to keep up without any issues.

Apparently the 360 will also play VC-1 (aka WMVHD, one of the Blu-ray codecs) files out of box, as well as MP3 and WMA. No word yet on all that wireless biz we've been hearing about, either.
Of course, the much more interesting news about the new ViP622-1 DVR with MPEG-4 and VC-1 support, a 500GB HDD and the ability to hook up USB drives for extra storage was also revealed during the press conference, we'll have more pics and information on that later.
Some have even gone as far as to state that Sony's strategy of using MPEG-2 and uncompressed PCM audio on single-layer Blu-ray discs may have required too much video compression, resulting in early releases that don't match the sharpness of VC-1 encoded movies available on HD DVD.
All of this leads yet again to more success for that VC, and so it goes While this cycle is great for the Kleiner Perkins and Accels of the world, it is not so for VCs overall: for the 10-year period ended Q3 2012, the average VC returned a mere 6.1%.
