At the moment Dr Haller, who is now at McGill University in Montreal, is collaborating with Wenbo Tang of Arizona State University and Pak Wai Chan of the Hong Kong Observatory to apply Lagrangian theory to the problem of aircraft taking off and landing in difficult circumstances.
Rafael Eufrasio of the Catholic University of America and Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center and colleagues from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil and the European Southern Observatory in Chile were interested in a number of regions away from the galaxy.
The new observatory was opened by Professor Mike Disney of Cardiff University's astronomy and physics department.
"We have taken a big step towards solving a century-old mystery, " said James Cronin of the University of Chicago, who, in 1991, conceived the observatory together with Prof Watson.
Adams also urged the United States to take a lead in the development of the arts and sciences through the establishment of a national university, the financing of scientific expeditions, and the erection of an observatory.
