Earlier this year Cardiff-based Tidal Energy Ltd was given the go-ahead by ministers to test its new DeltaStream underwater generators off the coast for a 12-month trial.
Underwater cables have been installed in Long Island, in a few test projects in Canada, and in a handful of European locations, but the Hawaii project will be one of the largest and most complicated.
