India taxes partly-assembled auto parts by up to 100%, while unassembled components are taxed at 10%, a measure meant to encourage local manufacturing.
The person said tax authorities were looking into allegations that BMW had imported partly-assembled auto parts into India but declared to customs they were unassembled to avoid paying higher taxes.
