Once that is done, the organ (in this case a kidney) and the bonemarrow are transplanted and the patient is confined for a fortnight in a sterile environment to protect him from infection while his new, mixed immune system boots up.
Another possibility is a bonemarrow transplant - the existing bonemarrow cells are destroyed using chemotherapy, then new, healthy ones are transplanted in to take over their job.
