With the passing of many Shashmaqom masters, the overwhelming majority of presentday performers in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are graduates of the Tashkent Conservatory, which offers trainingin Shashmaqom composition.
It's his Trinity College trainingin London -- he got into composition by applying as a violist, he laughs -- that helps him go where no classicist likely even knows one might venture.
